On March 28, 2025, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude between 7.7 and 7.9 struck central Myanmar near Mandalay, marking the country’s most severe seismic event in over a century. The quake, originating along the Sagaing Fault, resulted in widespread devastation, particularly in the regions of Mandalay, Naypyidaw, and Sagaing. The disaster caused the deaths of over 3,600 people, injured thousands, and left many more missing. Significant infrastructure damage occurred, including the destruction of homes, hospitals, schools, and cultural landmarks. Jay Patton Online+3Wikipedia+3Stone Ideas+3
The earthquake’s impact was compounded by Myanmar’s ongoing civil conflict and political instability. The military junta’s restrictions on international aid and continued military operations in affected areas have hindered relief efforts. Despite calls for ceasefires to facilitate humanitarian assistance, reports indicate that military actions have persisted, further exacerbating the crisis. International responses have included China’s pledge of $137 million in humanitarian aid, encompassing food, medical supplies, and rescue teams. However, the distribution of aid has been challenged by the junta’s control over access to affected regions. The United Nations and various human rights organizations have expressed concern over the worsening humanitarian situation and have urged for unimpeded access to deliver essential assistance.
