Asteroid 2024 YR4 May Collide With Earth In 2032
Dear Friends & Neighbors,

A recently discovered asteroid, designated 2024 YR4, has garnered attention due to its potential to impact Earth on December 22, 2032. Current estimates suggest a 2.2% chance of collision, equating to approximately a 1 in 45 probability. The asteroid measures between 130 and 300 feet (40 to 100 meters) in diameter, comparable in size to the object responsible for the 1908 Tunguska event in Siberia, which caused significant local devastation.nationalgeographic.com
On the Torino Impact Hazard Scale, which assesses the risk of near-Earth objects, 2024 YR4 is rated at level 3 out of 10. This indicates a situation that warrants careful monitoring. However, it’s important to note that such initial risk assessments often change as more data becomes available. Historically, the perceived threat level of newly discovered asteroids tends to decrease with additional observations and refined calculations.nationalgeographic.com
The International Asteroid Warning Network issued a notice on January 29, 2025, in response to this potential threat. In light of the current data, astronomers are planning further observations to better determine the asteroid’s orbit and refine impact probability estimates. Given that the potential impact date is nearly eight years away, there is ample time for continued monitoring and, if necessary, the development of mitigation strategies.nationalgeographic.com
In summary, while 2024 YR4 presents a notable case for planetary defense considerations, the situation is under control, and scientists are actively engaged in assessing and addressing the potential risk.

Scientists are monitoring an asteroid that has a chance — albeit small — of hitting Earth. But there’s no need to panic just yet. Asteroid 2024 YR4 has an almost 99% chance of safely passing Earth on December 22, 2032, in the video published on Feb 4, 2025, by Reuters, as “Over 1% chance asteroid may hit Earth in 2032, ESA says| REUTERS“, below:

There is a legitimate chance that a regionally destructive asteroid could impact earth on December 22nd, 2032, and we have narrowed down where in the world this might occur. This is all due to the recent discovery of an asteroid referred to as 2024 YR4, which risks a Tunguska style event happening in the not-so-distant future. Today’s video will discuss this asteroid, its size, and give a broader context and analysis about what might happen next, in the video published on Feb 6, 2025, by GeologyHub, as “No Really, An Asteroid Could Impact Earth in 2032;This is Where“, below:

Detected on December 25, 2024, by the ATLAS early warning system, Asteroid 2024 YR4 is about 150 feet (50 meters) wide—comparable to a commercial airliner or a 15-story building. As of January 27, 2025, it holds a Torino Scale rating of 3, making it the only asteroid currently ranked above zero. With current data, astronomers estimate up to seven possible impact dates for 2024 YR4 between 2032 and 2079, with the first potential collision on December 22, 2032. If it were to strike Earth, the effects would be similar to the 1908 Tunguska event, where an explosion of 3 to 50 megatons flattened 80 million trees over 830 square miles of Siberian forest. While not an extinction-level threat, it could be locally devastating depending on the impact site. However, scientists expect further observations to refine the asteroid’s trajectory, likely lowering its risk assessment. A major challenge is that 2024 YR4 will soon move into a position where it cannot be observed for nearly three years. Until then, astronomers will have limited opportunities to track its motion. But even if future observations confirm a collision risk, humanity is not defenseless. In 2022, NASA’s DART mission successfully altered the path of an asteroid’s moon, proving that asteroid deflection is possible. Compared to Dimorphos, which was much larger than 2024 YR4, scientists are optimistic that, if necessary, similar technology could be used to protect Earth, in the video published on Jan 29, 2025, by Territory, as “Scientists Just Spotted another Asteroid following Apophis with a 1-in-83 chances of Chance of Hitting Earth“, below:

My take on Asteroid 2024 YR4, which currently has a 2.3% chance of colliding with the Earth in 2032, an event that’s likely comparable to a multi megaton nuclear weapon. The odds are still good that it’ll miss, but the chances may look worse before they get better, and there’s a real chance we can’t honestly know the answer by April when it gets too faint to observe until 2028. But this won’t be the end of the world, and might be an opportunity to put the capabilities of DART into real world use, in the video published on Feb 7, 2024, by Scott Manley, as “Asteroid Impact In 2032 – What Are The Chance? What Can We Do?” below:

Scientists have detected asteroid 2024 YR4, which has a small but non-zero chance of impacting Earth in 2032. This asteroid is estimated to be large enough to cause city-level devastation if it hits land. While the probability of impact is low, scientists are closely monitoring its trajectory. Past successful asteroid deflection missions demonstrate the feasibility of preventing a collision. The current focus is on continued observation and planning, with multiple mitigation strategies available should the risk increase, in the video published on Feb 2, 2025, by SciTech Vault, as “Asteroid 2024 YR4 May Collide with Earth in 2032| What yOu Should Know“, below:
