Tensions between China and Taiwan have intensified recently, marked by increased military activities, disinformation campaigns, and diplomatic confrontations.
Chinese Military Activities
China has escalated its military presence around Taiwan, conducting large-scale exercises and deploying warships and aircraft near the island. In October 2024, following Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s speech asserting Taiwan’s sovereignty, China launched extensive military drills as a “stern warning” to Taiwan.Wikipedia
Disinformation Campaigns
Taiwan’s National Security Bureau reported a 60% increase in disinformation efforts by China, with 2.16 million instances identified last year. These campaigns utilize platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok, employing fake accounts and AI-generated content to undermine Taiwan’s democracy and its relationship with the United States.AP News
Diplomatic and Economic Measures
China has imposed punitive actions against U.S. companies involved in arms sales to Taiwan, adding ten firms to its unreliable entities list. Additionally, China suspended tariff concessions on 134 items under the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) following President Lai’s inauguration in May 2024. UPI. Wikipedia
Statements from Leaders
In his New Year’s address, Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated that reunification with Taiwan is inevitable and that no external forces can prevent it. Conversely, President Lai Ching-te emphasized Taiwan’s commitment to strengthening its defenses and its role in defending global democracy against authoritarian regimes. Reuters. AP News
International Relations
The United States continues to support Taiwan through military aid, with a recent $571 million package prompting criticism from China, which views Taiwan as a “red line” in China-U.S. relations. Reuters
The situation remains complex, with both sides engaging in actions that contribute to ongoing tensions. The international community continues to monitor developments closely, given the potential implications for regional and global stability.

Since the Democratic Progressive Party came to power in Taiwan in 2016, cross-strait relations have become increasingly tense. And after the inauguration of the new president Lai Ching-Te this year, Taiwan faced frequent military threats from China. According to AFP, the Presidential Office in Taiwan hosted a tabletop military exercise for the first time, simulating a cross-strait military conflict. It was chaired by Taiwan’s Vice President Bi-Khim Hsiao and involved 19 central and local government agencies, as well as civil society organizations. The entire tabletop exercise lasted three hours, in the video published on Jan 3, 2025, by Taiwan Talks, as “Taiwan Presidential Office Simulations: Biden Arms Sale’s Impact on U.S.-China|Taiwan Talks EP533“, below:

China wants Taiwan—badly. For Beijing, unifying with Taiwan symbolizes the completion of its “national rejuvenation” by 2049. But Taiwan isn’t a prize; it’s a bear trap. Its rugged geography, advanced defenses, and the “porcupine strategy” make invasion a logistical and military nightmare. Add U.S. intervention, catastrophic economic fallout, and potential domestic unrest, and Taiwan becomes China’s ultimate undoing. Explore the layers of this geopolitical crisis in our in-depth analysis, in the video published on Dec 28, 2024, by The Military Show, as “The Second China Moves on Taiwan, the Trap Will Spring Shut!”, below:

The provocations from Washington just never stop. Be it Nancy Pelosi visiting Taipei or US military personell stationed on some of Taiwan’s closest Islands to mainland China, the US is upping its game to make sure China is provoked into a corner form which only war can result. Donald Trump just staffed his cabinet with people who want to bring peace to Europe to focus all their warfare on Asia. The signs for Taiwan (and the Philippines) are bad. The most sensible and rational thing to do, for leaders of China and Taiwan, is not to start any war or to set off WWIII by maintaining the status quo or letting go of Taiwan, for the sake of Chinese, Taiwanese, American lives, as well as the health of the entire planet earth.
