On October 10, 2024, due to a coronal mass ejection (CME) that has triggered a geomagnetic storm, the aurora borealis was visible across large parts of the U.S. This rare event allows the northern lights to be visible much further south than usual, even in areas like Chicago. The northern lights were seen as far south as Illinois, and even into parts of the Midwest, with potential sightings extending further south into Alabama. This rare event allowed people in areas that usually don’t experience auroras borealis (aka northern lights) to witness the natural phenomenon (WTTW News). The best viewing times are from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., and clear skies are expected. To increase your chances, try to find a dark spot away from city lights. Observers were advised to find dark areas away from city lights for optimal viewing (WTTW News).
