Governor Ron DeSantis has sent the Florida National Guard to assist with recovery efforts for victims of Hurricane Helene. This Category 4 hurricane caused significant damage across several southern states, including Florida, leaving many communities devastated by flooding and infrastructure damage. The deployment of the National Guard is aimed at helping with search and rescue operations, providing medical assistance, and ensuring that essential supplies, such as food, water, and shelter, are delivered to affected areas.
DeSantis criticized the federal response, urging the Biden-Harris administration to do more for storm victims, and emphasized the importance of keeping the ports open to ensure that supplies reach those in need. His administration has also implemented measures to speed up the flow of goods, including easing transportation restrictions (Conservative Brief)(Florida’s Voice).
Governor Ron DeSantis recently deployed the Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard to several ports in the state in response to a nationwide strike by the International Longshoremen’s Association. This action is aimed at keeping Florida’s ports operational and mitigating supply chain disruptions, especially as the state recovers from Hurricane Helene. The guards are tasked with maintaining order and resuming port operations to ensure that essential goods reach Floridians.
DeSantis also relaxed various transportation regulations, including toll waivers and size restrictions for commercial vehicles, to expedite the delivery of goods. This move comes amid criticism of the federal response, with DeSantis emphasizing the need to avoid delays in the distribution of crucial supplies(Conservative Brief)(FL Politics)(Florida’s Voice).
