Intense Wildfire Season In California In 2024
Dear Friends & Neighbors,

California’s 2024 wildfire season has been intense, with over 6,000 fires already recorded by early September, burning nearly 900,000 acres. Notable wildfires include the Park Fire, which has become the largest in the state this year, burning over 429,000 acres and causing significant destruction. Another large blaze, the Bridge Fire, currently spans over 51,000 acres in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, prompting evacuations as it remains largely uncontained. The Line Fire in San Bernardino has also burned more than 37,000 acres and led to firefighter injuries.
This season has been fueled by unusually dense vegetation due to a wet winter, followed by a hot summer, which has created ideal conditions for rapid fire spread. Grass and fine fuels are driving many of the fires, though timber areas are still at risk. The fire threat is expected to remain high through the rest of 2024 as temperatures continue to be above average across the state ( Wikipedia)(CAL FIRE).
One of the most recent wildfires in California, the Line Fire, which started on September 5, 2024, in San Bernardino County, has been confirmed to be caused by arson. A 34-year-old man named Justin Wayne Halstenberg was arrested in connection with this fire, which has already burned over 37,000 acres and destroyed multiple structures. The fire continues to threaten over 65,000 buildings and has caused significant evacuations. Halstenberg has been charged with arson and possession of flammable materials (The Independent)(CAL FIRE).
