On August 26, 2024, House Republicans held a forum to investigate the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. This event was spearheaded by a group of conservatives who were dissatisfied with the pace and structure of the official bipartisan task force, which had been established to investigate the incident.
The forum, led by Representatives Cory Mills (R-FL) and Eli Crane (R-AZ), took place at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C., and featured testimony from key figures like former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino and former Navy SEAL Erik Prince. This independent investigation aimed to scrutinize the security failures leading up to the assassination attempt and to encourage whistleblowers to come forward.
Meanwhile, the official bipartisan task force conducted its own investigation on the same day, visiting the rally site in Butler, Pennsylvania, where the assassination attempt took place. The task force, which holds subpoena power, emphasized that it is the only authorized committee to conduct the investigation and is expected to release a final report by mid-December 2024(Washington Examiner, POLITICO).
