Perseid Meteor Shower
Dear Friends & Neighbors,
(Please click on red links & note magenta)
Tonight, the Perseid meteor shower is reaching its peak, and it’s expected to be one of the most spectacular celestial events of the year. The Perseids are known for their high meteor count, with potential rates of up to 100 meteors per hour in ideal conditions. The best time to observe the shower will be after midnight, with the peak activity occurring in the early morning hours of August 13.
To enjoy the Perseids, it’s recommended to find a dark location away from city lights, as light pollution can significantly hinder visibility. The meteors will appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, located in the northeastern part of the sky. Since the moon is in its first quarter phase tonight, its light might slightly interfere, but overall conditions are still favorable for viewing.
Make sure to give your eyes some time to adjust to the dark—around 15 minutes is ideal—and try to avoid looking at bright lights or your phone screen during this time.
If you’re in the UK, check your local weather conditions, as clear skies are crucial for the best viewing experience (Express.co.uk) (Home | Natural History Museum).
If you’re in Central Florida, tonight is an excellent opportunity to view the Perseid meteor shower. The best time to observe the meteors will be after midnight, with the peak activity occurring in the early hours of August 13.
Where to Watch:
- Dark Locations: Find a place away from city lights to avoid light pollution. Locations like local parks, nature reserves, or rural areas will provide the darkest skies for optimal viewing.
- Eastward Direction: The meteors will appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, which will be rising in the northeast. Position yourself facing this direction for the best chance to see the meteors.
Best Practices:
- Time: The peak viewing window is between midnight and dawn. The shower will be most active in the hours just before sunrise.
- Eye Adjustment: Allow your eyes about 15 minutes to adjust to the darkness. Avoid looking at bright lights or your phone during this time to see even the faintest meteors.
Weather Check:
Make sure to check the weather forecast for your specific area in Central Florida, as clear skies are essential for viewing the meteors.
Enjoy the show!

Incredible bright streaks of light might be seen across the sky tonight. The Perseid Meteor Shower happens every year when Earth passes through trials of debris from comets or asteroids. When the debris hits the atmosphere, bright streaks of light can be seen in the sky. While meteors can be seen every night, more are visible during this particular shower due to better visibility. Some scientists are predicting that you could see 100 or more per hour. Dr Gregory Brown, Senior Public Astronomy Officer at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, has argued the Perseids is one of the fastest meteor showers but insisted there is nothing to be afraid of, in the video published on Aug 12, 2024, by Liverpool ECHO, as “Perseid meteor shower to be visible in parts of UK tonight“, below:
