Juneteenth Celebration
Dear Friends & Neighbors,

(Please click on red links & note magenta)
Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, is a significant day in American history commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. This occurred over two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had officially outlawed slavery in Confederate states.
Juneteenth is celebrated with various activities such as parades, family gatherings, cultural events, and educational programs that highlight African American history and achievements. It became a federal holiday in the United States on June 17, 2021, further solidifying its importance in American culture and history.
