Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a solemn day of remembrance in the United States for those who have died in military service. It’s a time for honoring and mourning the military personnel who have sacrificed their lives for their country, often marked by ceremonies and remembrances at cemeteries and memorials across the nation.
Initially called Decoration Day, the tradition began after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 20th century, it had been extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.
Many people observe this day by visiting cemeteries and memorials, where they might lay flowers and flags on graves. It’s also a time for parades, family gatherings, and, for many, the start of the summer season. The national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 PM local time.
Memorial Day also carries a cultural significance as a time of community gathering and respect, providing a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by military members and their families to protect and serve the country.
