According to Pentagon Press Secretary, U.S. Air Force Major General Patrick S. Ryder, the 70 year old Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was hospitalized for four days at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Virginia since January 1, 2024, for treatment for complications resulting from a minor elective surgical procedure on December 22, 2023. Multiple reports indicated that senior leaders at the Pentagon and White House (including President Biden, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan) were not informed about Secretary Austin’s condition and hospitalization until Thursday, January 4, 2024. According to New York Magazine, the reason for this delayed notification was due to the fact that Kelly Magsamen, Secretary Austin’s chief of staff, was also ill and was unable to report to senior officials about Austin’s illness until January 4, 2024. It is not clear what Austin’s elective procedure or resulting complication was. President Biden continues to have confidence in Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s leadership. Perhaps a tighter protocol needs to be in place.
