A volcano in Iceland finally erupted Monday, Dec 18, 2023, after weeks of anticipation. Vincent Drouin, a geophysicist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, joins CBS News to explain what’s happening, in the video published on Dec 18, 2023, by CBS News, as “Iceland volcano erupts after weeks of anticipation“, below:
The eruption, which broke out on the Reykjanes peninsula of south-west Iceland, comes after weeks of intense earthquakes and tremors. Fumes could reach Reykjavik by Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning. About 4,000 people were evacuated last month from Grindavik, a fishing town threatened by the lava flow.
Iceland has been braced for volcanic activity for weeks. Since late October, the region around Reykjavik has been experiencing an increase in earthquake activity. The eruption can be seen from Reykjavik, which is about 42km north-east of Grindavik.
For more details about 2023 Iceland earthquakes, please refer to the excerpt from wikipedia, in italics, below:
An intense earthquake swarm in Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula began on 24 October 2023, due to a magmatic intrusion underneath the area.[1] The frequency and intensity of the earthquakes dramatically increased on 10 November, with 20,000 tremors recorded by that time, the largest of which exceeded magnitude 5.3. An evacuation was ordered in the town of Grindavík, which is located near the area of the seismic activity.[1] Large-scale subsidence in and around the town is reported to have caused significant damage.
On 18 December 2023, a volcanic eruption began at Sundhnúkur north of Grindavík.[2]
On the site of the eruption. North of Hagafell mountain. 7 km from Grindavik, in the video published on Dec 18, 2023, vy GutnTog, as “Exact site of the new eruption. Lava threatens both Grindavik and the Power Plant! 19.12.23“, below:
