Powerful earthquakes struck the southern Philippines over the weekend and into this week, while a volcano in Indonesia erupted on Sunday (Dec 3, 2023). A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines on Monday (Dec 4, 2023) morning, following a series of strong quakes in the same area for three days. A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the same region in Davao City late on Saturday (Dec 2, 2023), followed by a 6.6 quake on Sunday. Saturday’s quake triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific region and sent residents fleeing along the east coast of Mindanao, evacuating a hospital, and seeking higher ground. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology initially warned of a “destructive tsunami” after the first quake Saturday, expecting “life-threatening” waves, though none occurred and the warning later ended. Earthquakes are common in the Philippines, which lies on the “Ring of Fire,” a belt of volcanoes circling the Pacific Ocean that is prone to seismic activity. Another region that sits on the “Ring of Fire” was affected on Sunday (Dec 3, 2023). Indonesia’s Marapi volcano in West Sumatra province erupted on Sunday, spewing volcanic ash as high as 3,000 meters into the air. According to the country’s disaster management agency BNPB and other authorities, the 2,891-meter-high volcano erupted at 2:54 PM local time, and volcanic ash was dispersed at high intensity to nearby districts. Eyewitness footage showed clouds of ash hanging over Marapi mountain, while cars, crops, and roads were covered with a thick layer of volcanic ash. According to Indonesia’s volcanology agency, the country has 127 active volcanoes, in the video published on Dec 4, 2023, by Arirang News, as “Powerful earthquake hits Philippines, volcano erupts in Indonesia“, below:
A 6.2 magnitude quake shook the Philippines, causing worry in Manila. This marks the fourth significant quake lately. Prior ones include a 7.5 magnitude with a tsunami alert and a fatal 6.7 magnitude quake. Concerns persist about more seismic activity, in the video published on Dec 5, 2023, by Oneindia News, as “Philippines Jolted by Another 6.2 Magnitude Quake, 4th Earthquake in Three Days| Oneindia News“, below:
A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck Saturday off the cost of the southern Philippines island of WPLGand Philippine authorities issued a tsunami warning, in the video published on Dec 2, 2023, by WPLG Local 10, as “7.6 magnitude earthquake strikes near the southern Philippines;tsunami warning issued“, below:
A major magnitude 7.6 earthquake just struck east and offshore of the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. This quake was a megathrust event, and as a result caused some damage, created large cracks in the ground, and even generated a tsunami. This video will discuss the earthquake which just occurred, its aftershocks, and the liquefaction danger it might have caused, in the video published on Dec 3, 2023, by GeologyHub, as “Philippines Earthquake Update; Tsunami Generated, Magnitude 7.6 Quake Strikes Mindanao“, below:
Tsunami waves measuring 40 centimetres, or 1.3 feet, have been reported on Japan’s Hachijojima island, located 290 kilometres south of Tokyo. The Japan Meteorological Agency had earlier warned that the waves could reach up to one meter, or 3 feet, in height, in the video published on Dec 3, 2023, by Oneindia News, as “Philippines Earthquake triggers Tsunami waves of 40 cm in Japan| Mindanao quake| Oneindia News“, below:
