She was an outspoken advocate for womens’ rights and mental health. After the white house, she and Jimmy helped to forge what sadly turned out to be a temporary peace between Israel and Palestine. They spent their golden years helping others through their foundation and habitat for humanity. Rosalynn Carter, the wife of former President Jimmy Carter and a dedicated advocate for mental health and humanitarian causes, passed away on Sunday at her home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family. She was 96. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Rosalynn Carter was diagnosed with dementia, and the Carter Center announced her entry into hospice care on Friday. Her husband, Jimmy Carter, who is 99 years old, has been in hospice care since February. Former President Carter expressed his deep connection with Rosalynn, stating, “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.” Rosalynn Carter served as the first lady from 1977 to 1981 and earned the nickname “Steel Magnolia” for her combination of toughness and gentle exterior. Throughout her husband’s political career, she played a crucial role as his closest political adviser, expanding the traditional first lady role by engaging in more than just hostess duties. Born in 1927 in Plains, Georgia, Rosalynn grew up during the Great Depression, experiencing humble beginnings. After her father’s death when she was 13, she took on the caregiving role for her siblings. Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter’s romance began when they went on their first date in 1945 and eventually led to a marriage that lasted more than 75 years. In the White House, Rosalynn Carter focused on mental health as a top priority, advocating for modernizing mental health care and reducing the stigma around mental illness. She played a significant role in President Carter’s signing of the Mental Health Systems Act in 1980, which aimed to improve community mental health clinics. After leaving the White House, the Carters returned to Plains and founded the Carter Center, engaging in various humanitarian causes, including efforts to eradicate Guinea worm disease and monitoring elections worldwide. They received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999 from President Bill Clinton. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden praised Rosalynn Carter’s legacy, acknowledging her contributions to equal rights, mental health advocacy, and other causes. In a joint statement, they emphasized the positive impact she and Jimmy Carter had on countless lives. Reflecting on her life, Rosalynn Carter once said, “I would like for people to think I took advantage of the opportunities I had and did the best I could.” in the video published on Nov 20, 2023, by Trend N Stories, as “Rosalynn Carter: The Life Journey with President Jimmy Carter“, below:

Eleanor Rosalynn Carter (/ˈroʊzəlɪn/ ROH-zə-lin; née Smith; August 18, 1927 – November 19, 2023) was an American writer, activist and humanitarian who served as the first lady of the United States from 1977 to 1981, as the wife of President Jimmy Carter.[1] Throughout her decades of public service, she was perhaps best known for being a leading advocate for women’s rights and mental health.[2]
Carter was born and raised in Plains, Georgia, graduated as valedictorian[3] of Plains High School, and soon after attended Georgia Southwestern College, where she graduated in 1946. She first became attracted to her husband, also from Plains, after seeing a picture of him in his U.S. Naval Academy uniform, and they married in 1946. Carter helped her husband win the governorship of Georgia in 1970, and decided to focus her attention in the field of mental health when she was that state’s first lady. She campaigned for her husband during his successful bid to become president of the United States in the 1976 election, defeating incumbent Republican president Gerald Ford.
Carter was politically active during her husband’s presidency, though she declared that she had no intention of being a traditional first lady. During his term of office, Carter supported her husband’s public policies as well as his social and personal life. To remain fully informed, she sat in on Cabinet meetings at the invitation of the President. Carter also represented her husband in meetings with domestic and foreign leaders, including as an envoy to Latin America in 1977. He found her to be an equal partner. She campaigned for his re-election bid in the 1980 election, which he lost to Republican Ronald Reagan.
After leaving the White House in 1981, Carter continued to advocate for mental health and other causes, wrote several books, and became involved in the national and international work of the Carter Center. She and her husband also contributed to the expansion of the nonprofit housing organization Habitat for Humanity. In 1987, she founded the Institute for Caregivers, to inform and support the efforts of caregivers. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom alongside her husband in 1999.
