On November 11, 2023, NASA has temporarily suspended all commands to Martian spacecraft, and this communication blackout will continue until November 25, 2023, during a period known as solar conjunction, which occurs every two years when the Sun, Earth, and Mars align in a straight line. During this time, the Sun’s intense radiation can disrupt communication signals between Earth and spacecraft operating near Mars. To protect the spacecraft and ensure mission success, NASA has halted sending commands to its Mars rovers, orbiters, and landers. This communication blackout will continue until November 25, 2023, when Mars emerges from behind the Sun. The temporary suspension of Mars missions is a standard procedure during solar conjunction and does not indicate any problems with the spacecraft themselves. Once Mars clears the Sun’s line of sight, NASA will resume communication with its Martian fleet and continue its exploration of the Red Planet. Here’s a summary of the reasons why NASA suspended its Mars missions during solar conjunction: Disruption of Communication Signals: The Sun’s intense radiation during solar conjunction can interfere with radio signals between Earth and spacecraft, potentially leading to lost commands or corrupted data. Protection of Spacecraft: To prevent damage to the spacecraft’s electronic components, NASA takes precautionary measures by suspending communication during solar conjunction. Mission Success: By temporarily halting missions, NASA ensures that its valuable Martian assets remain safe and can resume their scientific investigations once solar conjunction ends. The temporary suspension of Mars missions highlights the challenges of space exploration and the importance of careful planning and execution to ensure mission success, in the video published on Nov 25, 2023, by Erudite_Chronicles, as “Why NASA Immediately Suspended All Mars Missions…@Erudite_Chronicles“, below:
Mars disappeared from the sky over Earth on Saturday (Nov. 18, 2023) when the Red Planet was apparently swallowed by the sun. This disappearance may look dramatic but it is actually the result of Marspassing to the opposite side of the sun to Earth during an event that astronomers call solar conjunction. According toIn the Sky, Mars will be separated from the sun by just less than one degree as it makes its close approach to the star. Both bodies will be in the constellation of Libra. After this, the Red Planet will be unobservable for several weeks as it is washed out by the glare of our star. During the solar conjunction, an event which Earth and Mars experience every two Earth years, the two planets will also be at their greatest separation. Mars and Earth are usually separated by an average distance of around 140 million miles (225 million kilometers). During the solar conjunction, Earth and Mars will be separated by around 235 million miles, more than two and half times the average distance between our planet andthe sun.
During the solar conjunction, mission controllers on Earth lose contact with robotic Mars missions. Rovers grind to a halt, Ingenuity is grounded, and spacecraft do not beam data back to Earth. This is done to prevent the possibility of a partial command getting through that interferes with operations of the robots or spacecraft.”NASA will hold off sending commands to its Mars fleet for two weeks, from Nov. 11 to 25, while Earth and the Red Planet are on opposite sides of the sun. Called Mars solar conjunction, this phenomenon happens every two years,” NASA said in astatement. “The missions pause because hot, ionized gas expelled from the sun’s corona could potentially corrupt radio signals sent from Earth to NASA’s Mars spacecraft, leading to unexpected behaviors.”
Signals to Mars were halted on Saturday, Nov. 11 and will resume on Nov. 25. This won’t be a holiday for Mars missions, which will continue to gather data about Mars surface conditions, weather and the movement of sand across the Martian surface.
“Our mission teams have spent months preparing to-do lists for all our Mars spacecraft,” Mars Relay Network manager Roy Gladden said in the statement. “We’ll still be able to hear from them and check their states of health over the next few weeks.“
Over the next few months Mars will emerge from the wide side of the sun and will be visible for longer and longer periods in the sky prior to dawn. In around a year it will reach opposition, at which time Mars will be visible for most of the night over Earth.
For more about Solar conjunction, please refer to the excerpt from wikipedia, in italics, below:
Solar conjunction generally occurs when a planet or other Solar System object is on the opposite side of theSun from the Earth. From an Earth reference, the Sun will pass between the Earth and the object. Communication with any spacecraft in solar conjunction will be severely limited due to the Sun’s interference on radio transmissions from the spacecraft.[1]
The term can also refer to the passage of the line of sight to an interior planet (Mercury or Venus) or comet being very close to the solar disk. If the planet passes directly in front of the Sun, a solar transitoccurs.
NASA, the renowned space agency, has made a momentous decision to halt all of their Mars missions with immediate effect. Stay tuned as we uncover the compelling reason behind this unprecedented move! NASA has not had any contact with any of its robotic missions on or around Mars for almost two weeks now. And so, what were the reason why NASA suspended all Mars mission? Let’s find out in today’s episode! Hello everyone! Welcome back to Elon Musk Evolution, where we bring you the most recent news about Elon Musk and his multi billion-dollar companies, space news and the latest science and technology. But, before we begin, make sure you subscribe to our channel and click the bell icon so you don’t miss any of our amazing videos. A phenomenon referred to as solar conjunction occurs between Earth and Mars for a brief period of time approximately once every two years. During this time, the two planets are positioned on opposing sides of the Sun. According to the information presented on the website dedicated to stargazing Mars will be obscured by the brightness of the Sun for a number of weeks at this time, and our ability to communicate with our robotic friends on the fourth rock will be limited at best. The Sun and Mars will both be located in the constellation Libra, which may be seen in the sky. During solar conjunctions, the distance between Mars and the sun is significantly less than the typical average of approximately 140 million miles. This distance is equivalent to around 2.5 astronomical units (AU) from Earth, which is equivalent to approximately 235 million miles. This is essentially the cosmic opposite of Mars opposition, which is when the Earth is instead trapped between Mars and the Sun (and the God of War planet appears particularly bloodthirsty in the night sky). Why, then, should we have to say goodbye to our mechanical robots? The Sun, which is essentially a gigantic sphere of interference, is the root of the problem, as far as we can tell. When rovers, orbiters, and even one remarkable helicopter attempt to relay data back to Earth, the information can be disturbed by the charged particles of the Sun, which could leave behind gaps in the data. On the other hand, the opposite outcome is much more catastrophic because incorrect commands transmitted by NASA could be the cause of the failure of a mission. That does not mean that these robots will be going on a lengthy vacation, according to NASA’s explanation. Mars Reconnaissance and Odyssey orbiters will continue on as usual (though without phoning home, of course), the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft will still study the atmosphere, and even NASA’s pint-sized helicopter Ingenuity will monitor the movement of Martian sand while it is grounded. All of these rovers will continue to monitor the Martian surface while they are unable to move. Roy Gladden, manager of the Mars Relay Network at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, said in a press statement that “our mission teams have spent months preparing to-do lists for all of our Mars spacecraft.” Over the course of the following two weeks, we should still be able to hear from them and check on their levels of health. Nevertheless, even these health checks won’t be possible for the full two days and nights that Mars will be directly obscured by the disk of the Sun. While the different mission controls come together to collectively hold their breath, we can only hope that after two days, the recognizable indications of mechanical life will begin to whir back into existence, and humanity’s Martian colleagues will be ready to share the things they’ve learnt while we were away, in the video published on Nov 30, 2023, by Elon Musk Evolution, as “Elon Musk REVEALS Why NASA Suspended All Mars Mission!“, below:
