Yes, it is that time of the year…THE TIME FOR HALLOWEEN COSTUMES, TRICK-AND-TREATERS, HAUNTED MANSIONS, etc.! To learn more about the history about Halloween, please refer to the excerpt from wikipedia, in italics, below:
Halloween or Hallowe’en (less commonly known as Allhalloween,[9] All Hallows’ Eve,[10] or All Saints’ Eve)[11] is a celebration observed in many countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. It begins the observance of Allhallowtide,[12] the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.[5][13][14][15] In popular culture, the day has become a celebration of horror, being associated with the macabre and supernatural.[16]
One theory holds that many Halloween traditions were influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, which are believed to have pagan roots.[17][18][19][20] Some go further and suggest that Samhain may have been Christianized as All Hallow’s Day, along with its eve, by the early Church.[21] Other academics believe Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, being the vigil of All Hallow’s Day.[22][23][24][25] Celebrated in Ireland and Scotland for centuries, Irish and Scottish immigrants took many Halloween customs to North America in the 19th century,[26][27] and then through American influence various Halloween customs spread to other countries by the late 20th and early 21st century.[16][28]
Popular Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guising and souling), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins or turnips into jack-o’-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, and watching horror or Halloween-themed films.[29] Some people practice the Christian observances of All Hallows’ Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead,[30][1][31] although it is a secular celebration for others.[32][2][33] Some Christians historically abstained from meat on All Hallows’ Eve, a tradition reflected in the eating of certain vegetarian foods on this vigil day, including apples, potato pancakes, and soul cakes.[34][35][36][37]
This video discusses the long history of Halloween. From the Celtic practice of Samhain, to medieval Catholic observance of All Saint’s Day, to Victorian Gothic, and finally the modern practice of trick-or-treat, in the video published on Oct 3, 2023, by Ryan Reeves, as “The History of Halloween“, below:
Halloween is now one of the most popular holidays in the modern Western world, but where did it all come from? From the creation of the name ‘Halloween’, to spooky spirits that started as loving ancestors, to the devilish story of where Jack-o-Lanterns came from, the origins of Halloween might just be somewhat surprising…in the video published on Oct 28, 2022, by History’s Forgotten People, as “The Surprising Origins of Halloween| Samhain| All Hallows’ Eve“, below:
Halloween or Samhain? Why witches, pumpkins and spooky things? Are we really celebrating what our ancestors did, or has it all become a lot of commercial nonsense. Here I look at what Samhain was, and what Halloween is, and the differences are, well… just watch the video, in the video published on Oct 1, 2022, by Crecganford, as “The ORIGIN of Halloween? What it really was about...”, below:
