In this episode, Peter and Andrew discuss the challenges and potential solutions for modern democracy, including reinventing voting systems, potential threats from AI in the upcoming presidential elections, and UBI (Universal Basic Income). Andrew Yang is an American businessman, attorney, and politician. He was a candidate in the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries and the 2021 New York City Democratic mayoral primary. Yang is the co-chair of the Campaign for a Human-Centered Economy. His signature policy was a universal basic income (UBI) of $1,000 a month as a response to job displacement by automation. Yang has been credited with popularizing the idea of universal basic income through his candidacy and activism, in the video published on Aug 31, 2023, by Peter H. Diamandis, as “How AI Is Impacting Politics & Accelerating the Need For UBI w/Andrew Yang| EP #61“, below:
Andrew Yang created the Forward Party of the United States because Yang believes that “our leaders are rewarded based not on solving problems but on accruing resources and retaining office.” For more details about the Forward Party, please refer to the excerpt from wikipedia, in italics, below:
The Forward Party, also known simply as Forward (FWD), is a centrist[6][7] political party in the United States. Forward has two political party affiliates at the state level that have achieved ballot access. It seeks to have affiliates with ballot access in 29 other states by the end of 2023 and achieve ballot access in all 50 states in 2024.[8]
The party, which was founded by former Democratic 2020 presidential and 2021 New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang, describes its goals as the reduction of partisan polarization and implementing electoral reforms.[9] Forward was officially formed as a political action committee (PAC) on October 5, 2021.[9] The PAC intends to seek recognition from the Federal Election Commission as a political party to achieve its stated goal of providing an alternative to the two major U.S. political parties.[10][11] It also states that, for the time being, candidates affiliated with the organization will remain members of the two major American political parties and America’s third parties, as well as independent candidates.[12]
On July 27, 2022, the Forward Party announced that it had merged with the Serve America Movement and the Renew America Movement to further its effort to form a new third party named “Forward”.[13][8]
