There is a migrant crisis in NYC. Dozens of asylum seekers, mainly from West Africa, sleeping on sidewalks outside of a Manhatten hotel this week, are waiting to be processed at a makeshift center following perilous journeys fleeing violence and poverty. The Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown Manhatten of NYC is now a migrant processing center for city shelters. With over 95,000 migrants having arrived from Southern borders since Spring of 2022, and many of them sleeping on the sidewalks of NYC while waiting for work visa or to become documented, Mayor Eric Adams of NYC needs help from the federal government to process these migrants and to provide health care, mental healthcare, food and shelters. Mayor Eric Adams said, “We need help. From this moment on, it’s downhill. There is no more room…We need help… It’s not going to get any better. ..It’s just not sustainable.”
New York City is one of handful of cities (sanctuary cities) in the United States that does not cooperate with Federal immigration authorities, meaning that undocumented immigrants are more likely to come to New York City knowing that they will not be deported. With its relatively strong economy and diverse job market, NYC has been an attractive destination for immigrants who are looking for work. But the recent migrant crisis has put a strain on the city’s resources, leading to overcrowded shelters, shortage of affordable housing, healthcare, and other services to the migrants. Mayor Eric Adams has announced multiple new initiatives, including plans to build new shelters and to expand legal services for immigrants, in addition to seeking help from federal funding from Biden administration.
According to Jessica Vaughan, CIS (Center for Immigration Studies) Director of Policy Studies, Sanctuary Cities, in italics: “These cities, counties, and states have laws, ordinances, regulations, resolutions, policies or other practices that obstruct immigration enforcement and shield criminals from ICE – either by refusing to or prohibiting agencies from complying with ICE detainers, imposing unreasonable conditions on detainer acceptance, denying ICE access to interview incarcerated aliens, or otherwise impeding communication or information exchanges between their personnel and federal immigration officers.” The map below is provided by CIS:
