According to CNN Health, in italics: The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an alert this week (week of 6/27/2023) to clinicians that there are locally acquired cases of malaria in Florida and Texas, with four cases identified in Florida and one in Texas over the past two months. While thousands of Americans become sickened by malaria every year, the vast majority of cases are acquired outside of the United States. These cases represent the first time that malaria has been transmitted within the US in 20 years, according to the CDC.
Public health officials across the U.S. are on alert for malaria after seven locally transmitted cases were diagnosed in Florida and Texas. NBC News’ Priscilla Thompson shares more on what guidance experts are sharing, in the video published on July 11, 2023, by NBC News, as “Seven locally transmitted malaria cases found in Florida and Texas“, below:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health alert after five confirmed cases of malaria were reported in Florida and Texas, in the video published on July 2, 2023, by ABC News, as “CDC issues warning about Malaria after cases reported in Texas, Florida| GMA“, below:
“It’s not clear why we have malaria now in this part of the country,” Dr. Manuel Gordillo says of two new cases found in Florida. Malaria “symptoms are nonspecific and could be due to a number of different things,” requiring a specific test to determine whether a malarial infection is present in a patient with flu-like symptoms, in the video published on July 10, 2023, by MSNBC, as “Two more malaria cases found in Florida; Doctor explains symptoms and treatment“, below:
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease affecting humans and other animals caused by parasitic single-celled microorganisms belonging to the Plasmodium group. Malaria causes symptoms that typically include fever, tiredness, vomiting, and headaches. In severe cases it can cause yellow skin, seizures, coma, or death. Symptoms usually begin ten to fifteen days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. If not properly treated, people may have recurrences of the disease months later. In those who have recently survived an infection, reinfection usually causes milder symptoms. This partial resistance disappears over months to years if the person has no continuing exposure to malaria. The disease is most commonly transmitted by an infected female Anopheles mosquito. The mosquito bite introduces the parasites from the mosquito’s saliva into a person’s blood. The parasites travel to the liver where they mature and reproduce.Five species of Plasmodium can infect and be spread by humans. Most deaths are caused by P. falciparum because P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae generally cause a milder form of malaria. The species P. knowlesi rarely causes disease in humans. Malaria is typically diagnosed by the microscopic examination of blood using blood films, or with antigen-based rapid diagnostic tests. Methods that use the polymerase chain reaction to detect the parasite’s DNA have been developed, but are not widely used in areas where malaria is common due to their cost and complexity, in the video published on Aug 21, 2018, by Medical Centric, as “What is Malaria, Causes, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment“, below:
Malaria Disease Treatment Guidelines, Life Cycle, Symptoms, Prevention, Medicine Lecture USMLE/NCLEX In this video on malaria fever treatment and management guidelines, i have explained in detail all the symptoms, management guidelines as well as the life cycle of malaria and plasmodium vivax/ovale and plasmodium falciparum. USMLE exams, as well as NCLEX exams, always test students and doctors on treatment and prophylaxis of malaria. Prevention from malaria as well as prophylaxis and different fever pattern of different types of plasmodia have been explained in this video, in the video published on July 16, 2022, by MedNerd, as “Malaria Treatment Guidelines, Life Cycle, Symptoms, Prevention, Medicine Lecture USMLE/NCLEX“, below:
