According to report published by Radio Free Asia, quoting from South Korean Intelligence Service: as a result of a 40% spike in suicide in North Korea this year, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared that suicide is an act of “treason against socialism” and issued secret orders to local governments to take measures to reduce suicides. The report also stated that the poverty-driven suicides has increased in North Korea and crimes and internal unrest is rising amid economic crisis in North Korea. UN experts predict that about 42% of the North Koreans are malnourished. This post is an attempt in gathering information about how bad things really are in North Korea.
CBS News partner BBC News spoke with North Korean residents who detailed vivid accounts of food scarcity and starvation following the country’s isolation policies and the sealing of its international borders during the COVID-19 pandemic. BBC News Seoul correspondent Jean Mackenzie, who spent a month secretly communicating with people in North Korea, has more, in the video published on June 15, 2023, by CBS News, as “3 North Koreans tell BBC News they are starving and afraid following sealing of border“, below:
They expose, for the first time, the disaster unfolding there since the government sealed the borders more than three years ago starvation, brutal crackdowns and no chance to escape. Under the tyrannical rule of Kim Jong Un, North Koreans are forbidden from making contact with the outside world. A spokesperson for the North Korean government has disputed the claims, which they said were “not entirely factual”, in the video published on June 15, 2023, by BBC News, as “North Koreans tell BBC they are stuck and waiting to die – BBC News“, below:
There are growing concerns among rights groups and aid agencies about North Korea’s chronic food shortages. Many experts who keep an eye on the reclusive state say the problem is growing and deaths due to starvation are likely to continue. Some see signs that the country is in the grip of its worst famine since the “Arduous March” blamed for up to 3 million deaths in the 1990s. Others, however, say conditions are not nearly as bad as they look, thanks to Chinese foreign aid propping up the economy. So what do we really know about the food crisis in one of the world’s most isolated countries? In the video published on April 29, 2023, by South China Morning Post, as “North Korea’s food crisis: How hungry are people in the hermit kingdom?” below:
People in North Korea have told the BBC food is so scarce their neighbours have starved to death. The government sealed the country’s border in 2020 in response to the pandemic, cutting off vital supplies. Exclusive interviews gathered inside the world’s most isolated state suggest the situation is the worst it has been since the 1990s, experts say. It has also tightened its control over people’s lives, our interviewees say, making it even harder to survive, in the video published on June 14, 2023, by BBC News, as “North Koreans tell BBC of neighbors starving to death – BBC News“, below:
