On Saturday, April 8, 2023, China announced three days of drills that lasted until Monday, April 10, 2023, after the President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, returned to Taipei following a meeting in Los Angeles with the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy. Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said as of 4 p.m. (0800 GMT) on Saturday it spotted 71 Chinese aircraft, including fighter jets and bombers, crossing the median line that normally serves as an unofficial barrier between the two sides, as well as nine Chinese ships. There was no great sense of alarm in Taiwan about the drills due to the fact that people in Taiwan have grown accustomed to Chinese threats. According to Reuters, a senior Taiwan official familiar with security planning in the region told Reuters the aircraft involved in the morning missions had only crossed the median line briefly.
Chinese naval vessels and warplanes have been simulating strikes, causing Taiwan to scramble fighter jets and gunboats in response. Bejing is furious after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California last week. As the two superpowers pull in opposite directions, where does Taiwan’s future lie? In the video published on April 9, 2023, by Al Jazeera English, as “What is Taiwan’s future in the tug-of-war between US and China?| Inside Story“, below:
Chinese fighter jets and warships have simulated strikes on Taiwan. China has deployed dozens of jets and vessels, encircling the island in a second straight day of military drills. It’s an angry show of force following a meeting between Taiwan’s president and senior US politicians. Beijing has described the drills as a warning to Taiwan, which it considers a breakaway province. Taiwan says they threaten regional stability and Washington is calling for restraint, in the video published on April 9, 2023, by DW News, as “Chinese military jets, ships encircle Taiwan in simulated attack | DW News“, below:
China says it is simulating precision attacks on key targets in Taiwan as the military drills it launched in response to the island president’s meeting with the US House speaker enter a second day, in the video published on April 9, 2023, by 9 News Australia, as “China carries out ‘simulated’ precision attacks on Taiwan targets | 9 News Australia“, below:
Tensions grew as China’s military simulated precision strikes against Taiwan continued into a second day of drills around the island. This time, it sent dozens of war planes and ships to simulate an encirclement of Taiwan. Beijing called it a “stern warning” after Taiwan’s president visited the U.S., strengthening ties between the self-governing island to the West. As Redmond Shannon reports, drills are expected to continue until Monday, as fears of a much larger conflict loom between global superpowers, in the video published on April 9, 2023, by Global News, as “China’s military drills encircle Taiwan as “stern warning” after Tsai’s US visit“, below:
China could “surround and strangle” Taiwan and which would challenge the Western world and particularly the US to do something about the situation, says Defence and Security Analyst Professor Michael Clarke. “The Chinese say about Taiwan exactly what the Russians say about Ukraine – it’s not a real country, it has no right to exist,” Mr Clarke told Sky News Australia. “Now China at the moment doesn’t have the military hardware to invade Taiwan, they certainly couldn’t do so successfully and it won’t have for a few years yet but it certainly has enough to strangle Taiwan.” in the video published on April 10, 2023, by Sky News Australia, as “China has the military hardware to ‘strangle’ Taiwan“, below:
China’s military has staged “simulated joint precision strikes on key targets in Taiwan” during a second day of drills launched near the island in the wake of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen’s brief visit to the United States. The announcement on Sunday came as Taiwan’s defence ministry said it had detected multiple Chinese air force sorties and was monitoring Beijing’s missile forces, in the video published on April 9, 2023, by Al Jazeera English, as “China simulates ‘strikes on targets in Taiwan’ as drills continue“, below:
