On the morning of 14 March 2023, a Russian Su-27 fighter jet intercepted and damaged the propeller of an American MQ-9 Reaper drone, causing it to crash into the Black Sea, the Pentagon said.[1]
The incident marks the first direct contact between Russian and United States Air Forces since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The US Air Force called Russia’s actions “reckless, environmentally unsound and unprofessional.”[2]
According to Deutsche Welle, the incident was the first time since the Cold War that an American aircraft was brought down after being hit by a Russian warplane.[3]
The incident comes amid rising tensions between Russia and the United States, with the Biden administration imposing sanctions and seeking to isolate Moscow over its invasion into Ukraine.[4]
On several occasions before the collision, Russian fighter jets dumped fuel on the MQ-9 – possibly in an attempt to blind or damage it – and flew in front of the unmanned aerial vehicle in unsafe maneuvers, the U.S. military said.[1]
United States European Command said in a statement that a US MQ-9 Reaper drone was flying over international waters in the Black Sea escorted by two Russian aircraft when one of the aircraft flew in front of the drone and dropped fuel. Then one of the planes damaged the drone’s propeller, forcing it to land in the Black Sea. The incident happened at about 7:03 am local time.[4]
According to National Security Council communications coordinator John Kirby, President Joe Biden was briefed on the incident by National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan on Tuesday morning.[5]
US Army General Christopher Cavoli, NATO‘s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, briefed NATO allies on the incident, which was strongly condemned by the White House and the Pentagon, who warned of the risk of escalation.[1]
The Russian ambassador to the United States was summoned to the Department of State in connection with the incident.[6]
The Russian Defense Ministry said its fighter jets did not make contact with the US drone, claiming instead that the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) crashed due to “harsh maneuvering.” “The Russian fighters did not use their airborne weapons, did not make contact with the drone, and returned safely to their home airfield”, the defense ministry said.[7]
A Russian Su-27 fighter jet collided with an American MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Black Sea on Tuesday, the U.S. military’s European Command said. U.S. forces brought down the drone in international waters, the command said, and the White House called the Russian plane’s intercept of the unmanned aircraft “reckless.” in the video published on March 14, 2023, by CBS News, as “Russian jet collides with U.S. drone over Black Sea, officials say“, below:
A Russian fighter jet forced down a US military “Reaper” surveillance drone over the Black Sea Tuesday, the US military said. The US condemned the jet’s “reckless” collision with one of its drones over the Black Sea. The US said that a Russian fighter jet struck the propeller of the surveillance drone in “brazen violation of international law.” Moscow said the American drone sharply maneuvered and crashed after an encounter with Russian jets near Crimea, but insisted that Russian fighter jets didn’t fire weapons or hit the drone. The Russian Defense Ministry said their fighters from air defense forces on duty were in the air to identify the “intruder” over the Black Sea, in the video published on March 14, 2023, by DW News, as “US military: Russian jet collides with US drone | DW News“, below:
