Recall our previous coverage on Governor Ron DeSantis Proposes Reinstating Florida State Guard back in December 4, 2021.
Keep in mind that: Since 1958 Florida has capped the number of troops at 12,000., resulting in Florida ranking 53 out of 54 among U.S. states and territories when it comes to number of troops per capita. Twenty-two other states are now supplementing their National Guards with their own State Guard forces. Florida State Guard started in 2022 with a budget of $10 million. Governor Ron DeSantis now wants to increase that budget to $98 million, to be inclusive of:
- $53 million for marine and aviation equipment
- $19 million for troop recruitment and training
- $22 million for hangers and storage facilities
- $1.3 million for salaries for administrators
As lawmakers in Tallahassee consider Gov. Ron DeSantis’ budget proposal this session, they will be also be deciding whether to approve a steep funding increase establishing Florida’s own branch of the military, in the video published on March 9, 2023, by WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando, as “Gov. DeSantis seeks $95 million to fund Florida state guard“, below:
