Gov. Ron DeSantis said Monday he wants to “reevaluate” the state’s relationship with College Board, the private company that administers Advanced Placement courses in Florida, in the video published on Feb 13, 2023, by WPTV News – FL Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast, as “Florida Gov. In all my years of travel, I believe, the United States of America has been far less discriminatory among people of different racial or socio-economic backgrounds; this is due to the teaching of “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…” and the ideas embodied in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. To detract from this fundamental premise would be detrimental to the American Dream, the American Ideals, the American Experiment. After all, we want our young people to believe and live in a society where all people are created and treated equally. As for the idea of abolishing prisons, that would be a mistake. What is needed is increased and/or improved rehabilitation programs in addition to job training programs that would help to reduce the recidivism rate. More enlightened drug laws would also help to reduce the prison cost and cost to human life.
Isn’t it possible for Governor DeSantis and the College Board to agree on a curriculum where the emphasis would be in the contributions of many African Americans who have made not only to the American History but also history of the world; to name some: Thomas L. Jennings (inventor of dry cleaning & first African American granted a patent), Granville T. Woods (developed railroad telegraph), Jesse Eugene Russell (inventor of digital cellphone), Paul L. Downing (inventor of the mailbox), Martin Luther King Jr. (Civil Rights leader), Frederick McKinley Jones (took out more than 60 patents throughout his life), Rosa Parks (Mother of the Freedom Movement), Muhammad Ali (greatest heavy weight champion), Louis Armstrong (musician & artist), Dr. Shirley Jackson (American physicist who received PhD from MIT in 1973, w/many inventions), Lewis Latimer (invented carbon filament for the light bulb & worked with Alexander Graham Bell), Tiger Woods (famous golfer), Whitney Houston (famous singer), Barack Obama (first African American President of the United States), Morgan Freeman (famous actor), Marie van Britton Brown (first inventor of security system), Otis Boykin (inventor of circuit improvements made to pacemakers, with 26 patents of various kinds), Lonnie G. Johnson (NASA aerospace engineer , inventor of super soaker toy, with more than 40 patents), Charles Drew (first developer of large-scale blood banks and blood plasma programs and blood mobiles), Marian R. Croak (SVP at AT&T, inducted into Women In Technology Internationals Hall of Fame, with over 135 patents primarily in voice over Internet Protocol voice)…etc. These African Americans need to be celebrated and remembered.
The College Board continues to face questions about its revised curriculum for advanced African American studies. See Van Jones react”, below:
Kimberle Crenshaw, professor at Columbia Law School, talks with Alex Wagner about why “culture war” is an inapt description of the way Ron DeSantis is abusing his power as governor to intimidate educators to obscure history and impose an obsolete ideology, in the video published on Feb 16, 2023, by MSNBC, as “DeSantis retrograde war on education, social progress stirs in Florida capital“, below:
