Hundreds of furious East Palestine residents packed into a high school gym on Wednesday, seeking answers to what health dangers they may face after a train transporting toxic chemicals derailed in their Ohio town. East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway said he wanted to help provide some reassurance for the 4,700 citizens of his town, and hold to account those responsible for the train derailment. The railway company, Norfolk Southern, cited “the growing physical threat” to employees and skipped the town meeting. Draining the chemicals into a trench last week, crews then ignited a controlled burn to get rid of the chemicals, creating a thick black cloud of smoke that was visible over the town. Despite the evacuation order being lifted, some residents have complained about experiencing headaches and nausea.
