It’s time to pay closer attention to local journalism and local coverage of political candidates; case in point, George Santos, a recently elected U.S. House of Representative from New York’s 3rd district, was accused of misusing campaign funds and fraud, including fabricating details about his personal and financial background. Now there are more than thirty local Republicans demanding Geroge Santos’ resignation. For more details about George Santos, please refer to the excerpt from wikipedia, in italics, below:
George Anthony Devolder Santos (born July 22, 1988) is the U.S. representative for New York’s 3rd congressional district, serving since 2023. A member of the Republican Party, Santos has been accused of misusing campaign funds and fraud, including fabricating details about his personal and financial background. He was elected to Congress in 2022, after running unsuccessfully in 2020 against incumbent Thomas Suozzi.
Before serving in Congress, Santos worked for a variety of businesses in New York and Florida. Most recently, he worked for a Florida-based alternative investment firm accused of running a Ponzi scheme, although Santos was not named in any charges and has denied any knowledge of the fraud.[1] After a Securities and Exchange Commission complaint against the company, Santos formed a company called Devolder Organization LLC.
Santos has made numerous false or dubious claims about his biography, work history, financial status, and religion in public and private. Six weeks after his election, numerous news outlets reported that large parts of his self-published biography appeared to be fabricated, including false claims about his ancestry, education, employment, charity work, property ownership, and crimes of which he claimed to be a victim. Santos has admitted to lying about his education and employment;[2] as of January 2023, he is under investigation by both U.S. and Brazilian authorities.[3][4][5]
Santos confessed in 2010 to committing check fraud in 2008 in Brazil,[6] but he failed to appear in Brazilian court in 2011, leaving the case unresolved. In the wake of his election, Brazilian authorities revived the case in late 2022. Meanwhile, there have been several judgments in the United States against Santos regarding eviction and personal debt cases; in 2022, he was accused of and admitted to failing to pay thousands of dollars in judgments from the 2010s.
