Canned yellow peaches have been sold out at major supermarkets as rumors spread on the Internet that they can alleviate COVID-19 symptoms. In fact, canned peaches has been a popular snack in China, especially in Shandong province. Peach is the second largest cultivated fruit trees in Shandong, with an industrial scale accounting for one forth of the country. Pingyin County alone processes and produces 40 percent of the total production of canned fruits in the country every year, and one out of three canned fruits in China is produced in this county. Linyi City in the province is a major peach production area in the country. In 2021, the peach orchard area and output of Linyi reached 908,000 mus and 2.252 million tons respectively. Since 2020, the peach output of the city has been the first among the prefecture-level cities in the country. The peach industry has been a pillar of fruit industry in Linyi, with its area and scale both exceeding 65% of the city’s fruit orchard. Mengyin County, Yishui County, Feixian County, and Pingyi County are the major counties producing peaches in the city. Canned yellow peaches don’t really cure fevers and coughs, doctors warn. They are a sweet “placebo,” like eating cake or drinking milk tea when you’re stressed, in the video published on Dec. 12, 2022, by Touch Shandong, as “Behind popularity of canned peaches: 1 out of every 3 canned fruit in China from Shandong province“, below:
