Fusion power is a proposed form of power generation that would generate electricity by using heat from nuclear fusion reactions. In a fusion process, two lighter atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, while releasing energy. Devices designed to harness this energy are known as fusion reactors. Research into fusion reactors began in the 1940s, but as of 2022, only one design, at the US National Ignition Facility (at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) has conclusively produced a positive fusion energy gain factor, i.e. more power output than input.[1]
There may had been much buzzing in the scientific community about certain recent progress made in the field of fusion energy at Lawrence Livermore National Lab, but as Dr. Michio Kaku reminds us that, “It could be 30 years before atomic fusion turns on the light in your neighborhood.”
My wager is still on solar and wind energy, with some hydro, meeting 100% of the energy demand on planet earth, before fusion energy will become a significant player of the energy field. Nevertheless, as earthlings expand horizon and will become multi-planetary species, there will always be greater need of greater variety of energy sources.
The Department of Energy is expected to announce a major development regarding fusion energy on Tuesday. Alex Gilbert, fellow at the Payne Institute, discusses the significance of this potential discovery, in the video published on Dec. 12, 2022, by NBC News, as “Fusion Energy Breakthrough Could Be An ‘Inflection Point’ For Clean Fuel Technology“, below:
The Washington Post reports a possible milestone in the pursuit of clean energy. CNN Chief Climate Correspondent Bill Weir lays out what this major breakthrough means for the future, in the video published on Dec. 12, 2022, by CNN, as “Scientists see breakthrough in ‘holy grail’ of clean energy, report says“, below:
The U.S. Department of Energy is set to announce that scientists have made a breakthrough on fusion energy – the process that powers the sun and stars – that could provide a cheap source of electricity one day, sources told Reuters, in the video published on Dec. 12, 2022, by Reuters, as “U.S. to announce fusion energy breakthrough – sources“, below:
An announcement is imminent that the US National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California has made a significant advance in nuclear fusion. It appears that a net energy gain in a fusion reaction has been achieved for the first time on Earth, in the video published on Dec. 12, 2022, by Dave Darling, as “Fusion energy breakthrough at the National Ignition Facility 2022“, below:
For the first time in history, US scientists at the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California successfully produced a nuclear fusion reaction resulting in a net energy gain. Science educator Bill Nye explains why this is such a big breakthrough, in the video published on Dec. 13, 2022, by CNN, as “Bill Nye explains why nuclear fusion breakthrough is a big deal“, below:
Wilson Walker reports on anticipation for expected announcement on a “major scientific breakthrough” at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (12-12-2022), in the video published on Dec. 12, 2022, by KPIX CBS SF Bay Area, as “Scientific community buzzing after Lawrence Livermore Lab fusion breakthrough“, below:
The U.S. Department of Energy is expected to announce a major breakthrough in nuclear fusion research, which could eventually create a limitless and clean source of power that would end reliance on fossil fuels. Manuel Bojorquez reports, in the video published on Dec. 12, 2022, by CBS Evening News, as “Scientists make major clean energy breakthrough“, below:
Finding and harnessing sources of energy has been a major task in the history of humankind. Similar to the resourceful nature of the sun, man-made nuclear power can produce large amounts of energy from few resources. It includes fusion and fission processes and the pros and cons of fission processes are well known today. This session will discuss the technological challenges of fusion energy and outline how it can be part of the solution for future energy demands, in the video published on Dec. 12, 2022, by Falling Walls Foundation, as “Advances in Fusion Technology: Breakthrough in Unlimited Energy Generation“, below:
