Even though the massive protests in China’s 17 cities have been subdued, the Chinese authority appears to be listening, starting to loosen the COVID grip in some areas by allowing people to be quarantined at home instead of at public facility. CNN’s Selina Wang speaks with a protester in China about why he took the risk to speak out against China’s zero-Covid policy, in the video published on Dec. 1, 2022, by CNN, as “‘Chilling’: Protester tells CNN what the atmosphere is like in China“, below:
Three years after coronavirus was first detected in China, it remains the only major nation pursuing Zero Covid. So as maskless fans enjoy the World Cup and countries all over the world move on, China remains stuck and the people are protesting. After the initial outbreak in Wuhan back in 2020, authorities were quick to clamp down on any emergence of the virus – pursuing a zero-Covid policy. That has seen China officially record a low number of both cases and deaths, a message to the world of how to do it right. But it’s all different, as the country is currently seeing a record number of cases. Today, our presenter Matt Frei discusses the widespread demonstrations in China – and the government’s recent move this week to ease restrictions and lockdowns – finally signalling a shift in its Covid policies after so long. But is the government bending to the will of the people or does Xi Jinping still remain all supreme? In the video published on Dec. 1, 2022, by Channel 4 News, as “China protests: the end of Zero Covid but not Xi – expert explains“, below:
Chinese leader Xi Jinping was just confirmed in office, securing a third term and eliminating political rivals. Now, the people are protesting against his regime. Tens of thousands in China are demonstrating against the government’s strict zero-COVID policy in several cities. The lockdowns have been going on for weeks and are costing jobs and wealth. Despite prevailing against his opponents in the Communist Party, some protestors are even calling for Xi’s resignation. So, on To the Point, we ask: Protests in China: How deep is public unrest? Our guests: Alexander Görlach (publicist), Qian Sun (freelance journalist), Felix Lee (taz), in the video published on Dec. 1, 2022, by DW News, as “Protests in China: How deep is public unrest? | To the Point“, below:
