The governor of Tennessee and top Southern Baptist leaders in Nashville are going after the Transgender Health Clinic at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) after videos posted by commentator Matt Walsh raised concerns about harm to children, religious liberty, and financial incentives. In the wake of the postings, Gov. Bill Lee (R-TN) is calling for a state investigation, saying the pediatric transgender clinic raises “serious moral, ethical and legal concerns.” A statement from his office added “we should not allow permanent, life-altering decisions that hurt children or policies that suppress religious liberties, all for the purpose financial gain.” One video shows Dr. Ellen Clayton, a VUMC professor of law and pediatrics, telling staff that objecting to providing transgender medical care is “problematic.” in the video published on Sep 23, 2022, by CBN News, as “Sounding the Alarm: Tennessee Governor and Southern Baptists Raise Concerns About Transgender Clinic“, below:
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee stated, in italics, below:
“The ‘pediatric transgender clinic’ at Vanderbilt University Medical Center raises serious moral, ethical and legal concerns. We should not allow permanent, life-altering decisions that hurt children or policies that suppress religious liberties, all for the purpose of financial gain. We have to protect Tennessee children, and this warrants a thorough investigation.“
Tennessee Attorney General’s office also stated, in italics, below:
“We are aware of allegations of illegal conduct at the Clinic for Transgender Health at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. General Skrmetti will use the full scope of his authority to ensure compliance with Tennessee law.”
Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) disputes the charges, telling CBN News that Walsh’s post misrepresent facts about the care VUMC provides and that VUMC does allow employees to decline to participate in care they find morally objectionable, and do not permit discrimination against employees who choose to do so.
VUMC, known for being the transgender therapy leader in the nation, declined to tell CBN News how many children VUMC has treated since its opening in 2018. Over 60 such clinics has been established in the past 15 years. VUMC maintains that they treat an underserved and high-risk population. There is a growing number of American doctors pointing to the lack of scientific evidence for these treatments which can permanently mutilate and sterilize children.
Now the tide seems to be turning, with states such as Texas and Tennessee pushing back.
Tennessee lawmakers plan to introduce new legislation banning child transgender procedures. The move follows scrutiny over practices at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Gov. Bill Lee’s announcement he’s opening an investigation into the issue, in the video published on Sep 22, 2022, by WKRN News 2, as “Push to ban child transgender procedures following Vanderbilt controversy“, below:
