New research suggests most people who catch the omicron variant of COVID-19 don’t even realize it! Scientists published the report this week and say it’s likely a big factor in the recent spread of the virus. Eugene Daniel looks at the study and what health experts say you should know, in the video published on Aug 19, 2022, “Study: People unaware they’ve infected with the COVID omicron variant“, below:
COVID-19 cases are slightly dropping across the board, but the trend can change in the next few weeks thanks to two new variants. Stephanie Magallon reports, in the video published on Aug 17, 2022, “Two New COVID-19 Variants May Be Cause for Concern“, below:
Brain fog. Memory lapses. Difficulties focusing or sustaining attention. All these cognitive issues have plagued some who have otherwise recovered from a bout of Covid-19. In this video, Stanford neurologist Michelle Monje describes her work showing how even mild respiratory infections with the SARS-CoV-2 virus may lead to lingering problems with the brain. Monje, who has long treated and studied cancer patients with similar symptoms following chemotherapy, says that the damage isn’t necessarily caused by the virus itself. Instead, her work suggests that inflammatory molecules released in the lungs of someone with Covid may trigger a reaction of immune cells in the brain. These brain cells, called microglia, then start a cascade of signals that alter the behavior of other brain cells, eventually slowing communication between neurons. The good news, Monje says, is that the similarities to what she calls “chemobrain” may mean that many of these persistent cognitive problems will improve with time, just as chemobrain does, in the video published on May 25, 2022, “Covid and the brain: A neurological health crisis“, below:
When COVID-19 first emerged, many researchers were focused on its impact on the lungs. But others, including Avindra Nath, Clinical Director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, suspected COVID could also have a profound impact on the brain. Brain autopsy data from those who have died of COVID-19 have confirmed these early suspicions, revealing damaged blood vessels and inflammatory cells. Less is known about the direct impact on the brains of people with persisting symptoms weeks after an initial infection, a condition known as Long COVID. What at first seemed like a laundry list of neurological symptoms has now been focused into major categories, says Serena Spudich, a neurologist at Yale University. Watch to learn how researchers and doctors have been teasing apart how COVID impacts the brain, and testing treatments to alleviate symptoms, in the video published on April 15, 2022, “Here’s what we know about COVID-19’s impact on the brain“, below:
Two U.K studies from Nature and Neurology show patients who’ve had even mild COVID-19 infections have MRI’s that show a 5m reduction in brain size, in the video published on March 8, 2022, “COVID-19 effects on the brain“, below:
A subset of COVID survivors are suffering from an unexpected side effect known as parosmia, a condition that causes their sense of smell to go haywire. Coffee smells like sewage and chicken smells like rotting garbage. Yara set out to learn how COVID is doing this to people, and what life is like when you smell and taste all the wrong things with no end in sight, in the video published on Aug 7, 2021, “The bizarre COVID side effect no one is talking about“, below:
CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta discusses some ways you can keep your brain healthy and stave off rot – especially during a traumatic time like the Covid-19 pandemic, in the video published on Jan 15, 2021, “Tips to keep your brain healthy from Dr. Sanjay Gupta“, below:
