Chloe Cole, a California teen formerly identified as a transgender is backing a Florida rule blocking Medicaid funds from paying for medical interventions for gender dysphoria. Ms. Cole decided that she was transgender at age 12, started taking puberty blockers and testosterone at age 13, and underwent a double mastectomy at age 15. She spoke at a public hearing on Friday, July 8, 2022, at Florida Department of Health, in favor of Rule 59G-1.050, which would restrict Medicaid funding for transgender drugs and procedures. Ms. Cole, now age 17, said at the hearing, that “I really didn’t understand all of the ramifications of any of the medical decisions that I was making…I was unknowingly physically cutting off my true self from my body, irreversibly and painfully.” In a separate meeting with Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, Cole added “I don’t know if I’ll be able to fully carry a child, and I might be at increased risk for certain cancers, mainly cervical caner. And because I do not have my breasts – I no longer have breasts – I’m not able to breastfeed whatever future children I have. That realization actually was one of the biggest things that led to me realizing that this was not the path that I should have taken…Do not transition your kids. If you are considering transitioning, please wait until you are a fully developed adult. Transitioning can damage your body and mind in ways that we may not fully understand.”
Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo tweeted on Sunday, July 10, 2022, that Florida does not support the medicalization of minors with gender dysphoria since the benefits are unproven. He thanked Cole for being courageous enough to share her account. “Medicalization of minors with gender dysphoria might advance the political views of physicians involved in their care, but the data showing any benefits for the actual children is extraordinarily thin. The affirmation model runs an unacceptably high risk of harm.”
Cole supports Rule 59G – 1.050, which would restrict Medicaid funding for transgender drugs and procedures, including puberty blockers, hormones, hormone antagonists, sex reassignment surgeries or other procedures that alter “primary or secondary” sexual characteristics.
Cole wants to have children some day, but is not sure if that will be possible since the viability of her eggs was compromised by testosterone injections. “I’m still in the dark about the overall picture of my health now,” she added.
Thusfar, there is no consensus from the medical community on the subject. But there is consensus that there is insufficient data to support overall long term benefit outweighing the negatives of medical interventions for minors at this moment. So it is wise that the Florida Department of Health decided not to support such medical interventions for minors.
Chloe Cole is a 17-year-old girl who was medically transitioned from 13-15 with puberty blockers, male hormones, and a mastectomy. She shared her story before California legislators in the Assembly Public Safety Committee on June 28, 2022, in opposition to SB 107, a bill to turn California into a sanctuary state for “gender-affirming care.” The bill also threatens the parental rights of every American parent, because it lets California courts overrule the parental custody of any parent, if their child has come to the state for sterilizing trans-drugs or surgery. See more details here: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/fa… “I attended a top surgery class filled with 12 girls who thought they were men most were my age or younger. None of us were going to be men, we were fleeing from the uncomfortable feeling of becoming women. I was unknowingly physically cutting off my true self from my body irreversibly and painfully.” Cole said. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and the state’s attorney general have directed state agencies to investigate families who provide gender-affirming medical care for transgender children. Dr. Stephen Rosenthal, a pediatric endocrinologist and the medical director of the Child and Adolescent Gender Center at the University of California San Francisco, joins Amna Nawaz to discuss, in the video published on Feb 24, 2022, “Claiming abuse, Texas tries to prevent gender-affirming care for trans children“, below:
Nicole Maines tells her story of growing up openly transgender and how she came to accept herself. She couldn’t have done it alone, however. While family support is essential, Nicole Maines insists it isn’t enough. Family and community must work together to provide the space for transgender youth to find their own voice and to feel valued as individuals.
