Did you know that a total lunar eclipse took place while many of you were asleep last night, May 15-16, 2022, the first of two total lunar eclipse in 2022?
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves into the Earth’s shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are exactly or very closely aligned (in syzygy) with Earth between the other two, which can only happen at a full moon. The eclipsed moon appeared as a faint red disk in the sky due to a small amount of light being refracted through the earth’s atmosphere; this appearance gives a lunar eclipse its nickname of a Blood Moon.
According to wikipedia, in italics, below:
A second eclipse will happen on 8 November.[1] The event occurred near lunar perigee; as a result, this supermoon was referred to some in media coverage as a “super flower blood moon“[Note 1][2][3][4] and elsewhere as a “super blood moon”.[5][6][7] The eclipse was the longest total lunar eclipse since 1989.[8][9]
The eclipse was a dark one with the northern limb of the Moon passing through the center of Earth’s shadow. This was the first central eclipse of Lunar Saros 131.
The eclipse was completely visible over most of North and South America, seen rising over Northwest North America, and the Pacific Ocean, and setting over Africa and Europe. It was the longest eclipse in prime time on the US west coast this century.[10]
