Four companies control 90% of baby formula market. CEO of Paregol, a baby formula company making store brand formula for companies such as Amazon and Walmart, expects facing shortage of baby formula for the rest of the year. So, White House launched a website aiming to help formula at: hhs.gov/formula . The important contributing factors for this shortage:
- Pandemic related supply chain issue last year
- Voluntary recall this year by one of the largest producers, Abbott, over concern about bacterial infection in 4 infants
- Too few producers in the market
- Strict regulatory standards preventing most oversea imports
Abbott is working with FDA to address any issue that was flagged by FDA at its Michigan facility and will restart that plant in two weeks.
A baby formula shortage has become a major problem for parents around the U.S., one without quick solutions. About 40 percent of formula is out of stock nationwide due to supply chain disruptions, inflation and a recall by one of the biggest producers.
