This year, in 2022, the last day to file federal taxes for the 2021 tax year for most Americans (in 48 states) is April 18, 2022, rather than the typical April 15 deadline because the Internal Revenue Service’s District of Columbia offices will be closed on Friday, April 15, 2022, in observance of the locally recognized Emancipation Day holiday in Washington, D.C. Residents of Maine and Massachusetts have April 19, 2022, as the deadline due to Patriots’ Day celebration in these two states.
According to H&R Block, if one is getting a refund and miss the tax deadline, there is no penalty, but if one owes the IRS and miss the deadline, then penalty kicks in. According to TurboTax, penalties can reach 5% of the amount owed for each month of delay, and the maximum amount of the penalty may reach 25% of the amount due.
