The UN General Assembly voted Thursday to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council as punishment for the invasion of Ukraine. Of the 193 members of the assembly, 93 voted in favor of suspension while 24 voted against and 58 abstained, suggesting weakening international unity against Russia. It was the second ever suspension of a country from the council. Libya was the first, in 2011. The 193-member U.N. General Assembly will vote on a U.S. push to suspend Russia from the Geneva-based U.N. Human Rights Council. A two-thirds majority of voting General Assembly members can suspend a country for committing gross and systematic violations of human rights. Russia is in its second year of a three-year term on the 47-member Human Rights Council. In late February Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine from three fronts.
