In a proclamation, Governor Ron DeSantis declared a Sarasota woman to be the “real” winner of a 500-meter freestyle event held last week. The top spot in the NCAA Division I swimming event went to University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas, who was deemed the first known transgender woman to win the title. However, on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, the Florida governor said the winner should have been Sarasota-native Emma Weyant, who finished second and attends the University of Virginia, in the video published on March 22, 2022, “Transgender sports: DeSatnis declares new winner after transgender swimmer places 1st“, below:

The battle over a historic NCAA win by a transgender woman continues. Gov. Ron DeSantis declared Sarasota Native Emma Weyant the winner of the women’s 500-yard freestyle swim, even though she came in second place. First place went to Lia Thomas. “That takes grit that takes the termination and she’s been an absolute superstar and she had the fastest time of any woman in college athletics,” DeSantis said during a press conference in Wesley Chapel Tuesday, in the video published on March 22, 2022, “Transgender athlete reacts to Lia Thomas win and nationwide backlash“, below:
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an official proclamation declaring a Florida resident the “rightful winner” of an NCAA woman’s swimming championship race over transgender swimmer Lia Thomas, in the video published on March 22, 2022, “Ron DeSantis Declares Florida Swimmer Winner Over Lia Thomas“, below:
NCAA did not respond when asked to comment. Transgender rights have long been a controversial and politically divisive issue in the United States, from sports, use of bathrooms, to serving in the military. The transgender athlete, Lia Thomas, did compete on the University of Pennsylvania men’s team for three years before transitioning and moving to the women’s team and setting multiple records.
Governor DeSantis said, “We need to stop allowing organizations like the NCAA to perpetuate frauds of the public. And that’s exactly what they are doing. They are putting ideology ahead of opportunity for women athletes and I think that there are just some people that are afraid to speak out and say what they are doing, but that is what they are doing.”
