Concerned about the war Ukraine? You’re not alone. Historian Yuval Noah Harari provides important context on the Russian invasion, including Ukraine’s long history of resistance, the specter of nuclear war and his view of why, even if Putin wins all the military battles, he’s already lost the war. (This talk and conversation, hosted by TED global curator Bruno Giussani, was part of a TED Membership event on March 1, 2022, in the video published on March 2, 2022, “The War in Ukraine Could Change Everything | Yuval Noah Harari |TED“, below:
It is much more difficult to hold Ukraine than invading it. So, in the final analysis, Putin may conquer Ukraine, but he will never be able to hold Ukraine.
It does appear as though, by invading Ukraine, Putin has revitalized European Union, US-EU relationship, and strengthened the transatlantic alliance and global liberal order, instead of dividing Europe. Harari further commented that this Russia-Ukraine war may be the opportunity to entirely end the culture war in the West, to make peace with culture war and strengthen the Western Democracy. Putin had certainly miscalculated the effect of invading Ukraine! The global reaction to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has demonstrated the decline of desire for war of human history, indicating that human beings have evolved to make better decisions and building better institutions. There would be sufficient global pushback to insure the era of peace for the future of human history. Since this war is the result of the decision of one man, Putin, then the question remains whether or not Putin has evolved to the point as majority of human on planet earth, in not wanting war nor violence. Harari also reminded us the need not only to stop this war, but to also repair and rebuild the House of Humanity based on Cooperation, in order to avoid the extinction of human species. As Harari commented, “We need to repair the global house in which we all live together. If it falls down, we all die.” We need to stand united to protect Western Democracy.
