Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is calling for face-to-face talks with Russia’s Vladimir Putin to resolve the crisis between their countries. Zelensky was speaking at the Munich Security Conference in Germany. He said Ukraine will not respond to growing provocations in the eastern part of the country, but will defend itself against Russian hostility. Kyiv says two of its soldiers died in an attack over the weekend, as shelling by Russian-backed separatists intensifies. The recent shelling of Ukrainian-controlled areas – which hit a kindergarten among other targets – has been blamed on Russian-backed separatists. DW correspondent Mathias Bölinger visited the area, to get a first-hand view of the situation and how it is affecting local residents. Meanwhile, Russia and Belarus are continuing to hold joint military exercises that were expected to end this weekend. DW’s Fanny Facsar reports from Kyiv, in the video published on Feb 20, 2022, “Hostilities escalate in Ukraine +++Russia, Belarus extend drills | DW News“, below:

Yes, the world wants peace, but President Zelensky (who equates lack of sanctions to appeasement) reminds us that appeasement would neither guarantee security nor peace.

Russia has extended military drills near Ukraine’s northern borders sparking fears an invasion could be more likely. As tensions heightened, diplomatic activity to avert war in Europe continued, with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron holding a two-hour phone call, in the video published on Feb 20, 2022, “Ukraine Crisis: Russia extends military exercises“, below:
Russia and Belarus will extend their biggest joint military drills in years, the Belarusian Defense Ministry said amid rising tensions in Ukraine. Russia and Belarus will extend their biggest joint military drills in years, the Belarusian Defense Ministry said, as frictions spike with the West over Russia’s military buildup near the Ukraine border. The training exercises were scheduled to finish on Sunday and Russia had said it would return its troops to their bases afterward. While those drills are in Belarus, which is north of Ukraine, the defense ministry statement cited the deteriorating situation in eastern Ukraine for the extension. It also referred to increased military activity along the borders of Russia and Belarus, a likely reference to NATO’s recent deployment of more troops eastward. Russia’s state-run Tass news service also reported the extension. The statement from Belarus did not say how much longer the drills might run. It comes as the U.S. and some of its allies say they believe Russian President Vladimir Putin has now decided to invade Ukraine and that an attack could come soon. Moscow has repeatedly denied it plans to do so, and has dismissed the U.S. claims as propaganda and “hysteria.” in the video published on Feb 20, 2022, “Belarus Says Joint Military Drills with Russia Will Continue“, below:
