Thousands of people converged on the Washington Monument on Sunday, January 23, 2022, to protest the Biden administration’s mask and vaccine policies amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Gathering at the base of the Washington Monument and then marching to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., protesters held signs that read “Make love not Mandates” and “Coercion is not a Choice.” On Jan. 13, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 vaccine-or-testing mandate for large businesses, which they deemed an improper imposition on the lives and health of many Americans. However, the top court did endorse a separate federal vaccine requirement for health-care facilities. Many U.S. companies have also implemented mandatory mask-wearing policies to protect their workers, as the country continues to deal with the highly-infectious Omicron variant. Some staff of the U.K.’s National Health Service (NHS) took to the streets of London on Saturday in protest of vaccine mandates for all health-care workers. The U.K. government has made vaccines for health and home-care workers mandatory starting April 1, 2022. According to NHS England, all workers in the NHS and independent health-care sector must present proof of vaccination by April 2022 in order to continue working.
