On January 15, 2022, Malik Faisal Akram, a 44-year-old British Pakistani citizen armed with a pistol, took four people hostage in the Congregation Beth Israel synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, United States, during Sabbath services. Hostage negotiations ensued, in which Akram demanded that Aafia Siddiqui, an alleged terrorist convicted of multiple felonies, be released from prison. He let one hostage go after six hours, and the remaining three hostages escaped 11 hours into the standoff. Tactical officers from the FBI Hostage Rescue Team then entered the synagogue, and Akram was fatally shot.

Jonathan Greenblatt said, in italics, below:
“Extremists took advantage of the political cover Trump offered them not just to commit acts of violence but to enter the political discourse, further normalizing hate... When a political leader, especially one with the tremendous reach and influence of President Trump, not only fails to condemn hate but actively encourages it, the entire tone of our nation’s discourse shifts.”
