Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings is standing firm, vowing to fight Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over the county’s vaccine mandate. The mayor’s comment is in response to Governor DeSantis’ announcement that he is calling a special legislative session next month, specifically to pass a law to ban vaccine mandate. Orange County Fire Battalion Chief Stephen Davis was fired this week for refusing to discipline fire fighters who were not vaccinated.

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings responded to Gov. Ron DeSantis a day after the governor weighed in on the firing of a former Orange County Fire Rescue battalion chief over vaccine reprimand concerns, in the video published on Oct. 22, 2021, “Governor Ron DeSantis takes on Orange County Mayor“, below:
Instead of lawsuits or harmful words, is it possible to find a middle ground in resolving this debate regarding vaccine mandate, in bold italics, below:
Allowing employees to provide either positive Antibody test result or proof of vaccine (as in the NHS COVID Pass in England, below, in bold italics) in order to continue with employment. Given that many of these workers may had already acquired natural immunity from previous exposure to the virus and the recent study from Israel concluded that natural immunity confers longer lasting and stronger protection against infection, symptomatic disease, and hospitalization caused by the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 (aka COVID-19), compared to the BNT162b2 (aka Pfizer COVID-19) two-dose vaccine-induced immunity by 13 fold.
You can obtain your NHS COVID Pass of UK after receiving either:
- 2 doses of the Moderna, AstraZeneca or Pfizer vaccine
- one dose of the Janssen vaccine
- proof of natural immunity shown by a positive PCR test result for COVID-19, lasting for 180 days after the date of the positive test and following completion of the self-isolation period

In UK, COVID Pass Guidelines requires proof of natural immunity shown by a positive PCR test result for COVID-19, lasting for 180 days after the date of the positive test at UK government web site: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/nhs-covid-pass#who-can-get-an-nhs-covid-pass-in-england indicated in italics, below:
Who can get an NHS COVID Pass in England
If you’re aged 18 or over, you can get an NHS COVID Pass for domestic venues and events.
If you’re aged 16 or over, you can get an NHS COVID Pass for travel abroad but you should follow the entry requirements of the country you are travelling to.
If you’re in the UK armed forces, visit ‘My health care hub’ on the Defence Gateway (login required) to find out how to get your NHS COVID Pass.
For travel abroad
You can obtain your NHS COVID Pass after receiving either:
- 2 doses of the Moderna, AstraZeneca or Pfizer vaccine
- one dose of the Janssen vaccine
- proof of natural immunity shown by a positive PCR test result for COVID-19, lasting for 180 days after the date of the positive test and following completion of the self-isolation period
You must have been vaccinated in England, Wales or Scotland. If you’ve been vaccinated in Scotland, you must be both:
- resident in England
- registered with a GP in England
You can usually obtain your NHS COVID Pass within 24 hours of having your vaccination. However, it can take up to 5 days for your records to be updated.
In essence, both Governor DeSantis and Mayor Demings are trying to find the optimal way in protecting residents of Florida and/or Orange County. They simply have different perspective. Perhaps a compromise between the two, guided by UK experience, may also arrive at: Allowing employees to provide either positive Antibody test result or proof of vaccine (as in the NHS COVID Pass in England, below, in bold italics) in order to continue with employment.
Since there are still breakthrough infections even after being vaccinated, it is highly recommended that every one to be masked when in public until the pandemic is over.
After all, Focus Should Be On Those Who Are Not-Immune Rather Than Not-Vaccinated.
