Republicans on the Hill have offered Democrats exactly zero votes to stop both a government shutdown and the default of the U.S. government, yet McConnell is trying to blame Democrats. We discuss that with Peter Baker, Claire McCaskill, and Eugene Robinson, in the video published on Sep. 23, 2021, “GOP Offers No Votes While Blaming Democrats As U.S. Default Looms“, below:
Democrats are trying to avoid the twin perils of a government shutdown next week and a catastrophic default next month. On Tuesday night, September 21, 2021, the House passed that bill linking the two together, suspending the debt limit through December of 2022 and funds the government until December 3. The final vote tally was 220: 211 along party line. But Republicans have vowed to block it once it gets to the Senate. Now instead minority leader Mitch McConnell unveiled his own proposal (which is opposed by Democrats) to fund the government without a debt ceiling increase. Right now the two sides are in a stalemate and the prospect for Democrats’ broader economic agenda doesn’t look much better. Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi will head to the White House to talk to President Biden about the path forward. The House is still planning to keep its promise to moderate and vote on that infrastructure bill on Monday even though progresses are threatening to tank it unless the bigger social spending bill is complete, in the video published on Sep. 22, 2021, “House passes fiscal cliff bill, Senate Republicans threaten to block“, below:
With a potential government shutdown just days away, the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution Wednesday that would keep the government running through December and suspend the debt ceiling for another year, but the bill faces an uncertain fate in the Senate, where Republicans are refusing to cooperate to once again raise the amount the Treasury can borrow, incensed over Democratic efforts to advance multi-trillion-dollar spending measures despite GOP opposition, in the video published on Sep. 21, 2021, “JUST IN: House Suspends Debt Ceiling On Party Line Vote, Bill Now Moves To Senate“, below:
In Senate floor remarks, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) lambasted Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for refusing to help raise the debt ceiling, in the video published on Sep. 20, 2021, “‘Crass, Craven Political Move’: Schumer Warns McConnell Not To Play ‘Games’ With Debt Ceiling” below:
Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) tells Lawrence O’Donnell that if Mitch McConnell votes for the United States to default on its debt “the American people will hold him responsible if there’s damage done.” in the video published on Sep. 23, 2021, “Mitch McConnell Says The GOP Will Not Vote To Increase Debt Ceiling“, below:
