WHO (World Health Organization) officials announced on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, that COVID-19 is likely here to stay with us as the virus continues to mutate in unvaccinated countries across the world. Previous hopes of eradicating it diminished. Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO’s Health Emergencies Program, said in a press briefing, “I think this virus is here to stay with us and it will evolve like influenza pandemic viruses. It will evolve to become one of the other viruses that affects us.”
Previously, officials at the global health agency said that vaccines do not guarantee the world would be able to eradicate COVID-19 like it has other viruses. White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci , Stephane Bancel, CEO of COVID vaccine marker Moderna, and various leading health experts have warned that the world will have to live with COVID forever, much like influenza.

Harvard trained epidemiologist Dr Eric Feigl-Ding predicted in January last year that COVID-19 would be a “thermonuclear pandemic” and he has explained why he believes vaccines alone aren’t the solution. The epidemiologist told A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw, “even for highly vaccinated countries relying on vaccines alone is not a panacea to stop Delta”. The British Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies fears a potential future variant could be far more deadly than existing ones – they could even evade current vaccines one day. It appears the total eradication of the virus will be unlikely. But how can we live with its constant mutation? It’s a good idea to get into the habit of wearing masks and practice social distancing in public regardless whether or not one had been vaccinated from this point forward for this is not the last pandemic we shall see.
