Earlier this week, the Office of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the Florida Board of Education could withhold the salaries of superintendents and school board members who defy the governor’s executive order prohibiting mask mandates. After two Florida districts, including Alachua County and Broward County remain defiant, Governor’s office is acknowledging that the state has no jurisdiction over local employees’ pay. His spokesperson called on “activist, anti-science school board members” to dock their own salaries if the state follows through with financial sanctions against their district.
Here is the statement released to CBS Miami on August 9, 2021, in italics, below:
“With respect to enforcing any financial consequences for noncompliance of state law regarding these rules and ultimately the rights of parents to make decisions about their children’s education and health care decisions, it would be the goal of the State Board of Education to narrowly tailor any financial consequences to the offense committed. For example, the State Board of Education could move to withhold the salary of the district superintendent or school board members, as a narrowly tailored means to address the decision-makers who led to the violation of law.”
“Education funding is intended to benefit students first and foremost, not systems. The Governor’s priorities are protecting parents’ rights and ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality education that meets their unique needs.”
As cases of the coronavirus rise in Florida, MAGA Gov. Ron DeSantis has maintained his crusade against safety measures. After banning mask mandates and threatening to withhold the salaries of officials who enforced them, DeSantis is now backtracking and admitting he does not have the power to take away those salaries. MSNBC’s Ari Melber reports on the situation, in the video published on Aug.13, 2021, “Florida’s ‘Mini-Trump’ Loses Teacher Clash: ‘I Don’t Have That Power’“, below:
