Deputy Sheriff Jose Vazquez of Orange County Sheriff’s Office shared with us some
Ridesharing and Food Delivery Safety tips, in italics, below:
Are you employed by a ridesharing or food delivery service? (Uber, Lyft, etc.) Last several months we have seen an increase of auto thefts of ridesharing employees. These thefts occurred when the employees got out of their vehicle with the keys still in the ignition and the suspect simply ran and jumped in the vehicle and took off. Some quick tips:
- Avoid getting out of the vehicle if possible. If you need to get out to drop off food, turn the vehicle off and take the keys with you.
- If your passenger, or the area, makes you feel unsafe before arriving, cancel the fare.
- In the event you are dealing with a passenger that is making you uncomfortable, pull over to a populated and well lit area and cancel the fare. If the passenger refuses to leave, call 911 and have deputies respond.
- Plan ahead. Do you know what to do in the event of a emergency? What if your vehicle gets stolen in the middle of an unfamiliar area? How will you call 911 if your phone is in the vehicle? These are all things to think about before your next fare. As always, Stay Safe and Stay Vigilant!
