The controversial Keystone XL Pipeline was officially canceled on Wednesday, June 9, 2021. It’s become a flashpoint in the fight against climate change. Opponents to the project argued that it would hinder American transition to clean energy such as solar and wind. Construction of the project was halted earlier this year after President Joe Biden revoked the pipeline U.S. permit that was approved by former president Donald Trump in 2017. Environmentalists, ranchers, Native American tribes, and climate change activists won the battle and welcome this cancelation. At this point, even the oil companies have come to realize that fossil fuel will no longer make economic sense by 2030 and resistance to clean energy is a losing battle.

Keystone XL Pipeline expansion of 1900 km pipeline, was originally proposed in 2008, and would have carried crude oil from Alberta to Nebraska, tied to an existing pipeline carrying crude oil to the Gulf Coast. This project was delayed for the past twelve years due to opposition from U.S. land owners, Native American tribes, environmentalists, and climate change activists. After President Biden pulled the permit for the project, Canada’s TC Energy, which owns the existing Keystone pipeline, pledged on Wednesday June 9, 2021, for a safe termination of the project.
