Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Thursday, June 10, 2021, that the Florida State Board of Education had passed a rule to ban public schools from teaching about critical race theory as part of the history curriculum.
According to UCF Professor Jonathan Cox, critical race theory is a theoretical perspective and practice for examining the role of race and racism in society. But many believe that critical race theory is teaching that United States was founded on racism and that white supremacy is steeped into the nation. Idaho, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee are some of the states that have also banned the teaching of critical race theory. Governor Ron DeSantis said that he wants to prevent educators from teaching kids to hate their country. Governor DeSantis tweeted, in bold italics, below:
“Florida’s education system exists to create opportunity for our children. Critical Race Theory teaches kids to hate our country and to hate each other. It is state-sanctioned racism and has no place in Florida schools.”

Bar teachers from “… to indoctrinate or persuade students to a particular point of view.“
“..may not suppress or distort significant historical events, such as the Holocaust, and may not define American history as something other than the creation of a new nation based largely on universal principles stated in the Declaration of Independence.”
