According to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a massive asteroid taller than the Eiffel Tower is expected to whiz by past Earth in a relatively close encounter (4.5 million miles apart) on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, about 10:24 am EDT or 7:54 pm IST. The asteroid known as 2021 KT1 is about 600 feet, the size of the New York Olympic Tower or the Seattle Space Needle. It is estimated to be between 492 feet and 1082 feet in diameter.
NASA classified this asteroid as a “potentially hazardous object” because it is larger than 492 feet and within 4.6 million miles of Earth. According to JPL (which tracks objects that drift close to Earth’s orbital area), the asteroid 2021 KT1 will fly near Earth at 40,000 mph. NASA is keeping a close watch on this asteroid even though it is not expected to make a direct contact.

NASA defines an asteroid as “rocky fragments left over from the formation of solar system 4.6 billion years ago.” This space matter is suppose to orbit the sun, but can occasionally stray from its orbital path because of the gravitational tug of planets. Scientists believe that the evolution of the planet could have stemmed from collisions of near-earth objects including comets and asteroids. NASA is studying ways to deflect hits from asteroid in case one does pose a huge threat in the future. One of these techniques still in the works is called the Gravity Tracker, involving spacecraft using gravity attraction from a satellite to change the path of the asteroid.

There had been other asteroids that came close to the Earth: an asteroid known as 2021 GW 4 was 12,000 miles away from the Earth’s surface traveling 18,700 mph in April of 2021. Founder of the Virtual Telescope project, Astronomer Gianluca Masi, said it was “an exceptionally close encounter.” Four smaller asteroids as big as airplane or house are expected to pass the Earth from Monday to Wednesday, and none of them is potentially hazardous.
