There are many reasons for President Biden’s hope and optimism: Since March of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic first struck, number of hungry Americans have dropped by 30%, 6% of economic growth projection in 2021 (fastest growth rate in 40 years), number of COVID cases are down, COIVD related deaths are down, unemployment filings are down, vaccination are up, job are up, growth is up, number of Americans with health coverage is up, small businesses confidence is up.
Two main reasons why all trends are heading in the right direction: 1. vaccination program was on the top of the priority list because pandemic needed to be fixed before fixing the economy. 6 million vaccine doses were made available for every single American. Thousands of additional vaccinators were recruited from FEMA and AMA (retired doctors and nurses). 90% of the Americans are living within 5 miles of a vaccination site. Now 50% of all Americans and 75% of the seniors are fully vaccinated. 2. Build-Back-Better approach to economic recovery by building bottom up and middle out. American Rescue Plan provided more than 167 million Americans with $1400 rescue dollars, helping families to pay for rent and bills and having hope. This summer, American families with children will begin to receive child tax credit. Amazing thing is: not a single Republican senator voted for the American Rescue Plan!
In the Build-Back-Better approach, President Biden also reminds us of:
- the importance of R & D in the 21 century and that we cannot afford to fall behind
- generational investments are needed in public investments in order for America to succeed tomorrow
- the importance of education: proposal of 16 year mandatory education (added 2 years of pre-K and 2 years of community college education)
- USA is now ranked 13th in the world for infrastructure: investments in infrastructure and in climate change for renewable energy is needed
- major investments in research in health and medicine: investments leading to breakthrough in Alzheimer and various other chronic conditions are needed
- contracts need to lead to American jobs
- Congress should raise minimum wage to $15 per hour & protect workers rights to organize
- Bring every one along on this journey of Build-Back-Better
The Biden administration is set to release its first budget proposal later today. CNBC’s Eamon Javers reports on what to expect, in the video published on May 28, 2021, “Biden administration to release $6 trillion budget proposal – Here’s what we know“, below:
